  10. How to Cancel my MSN, AOL, or NetZero Account

  1. How much does it cost?

Most people go with our single user unlimited plan for $19.95/mo. We also offer a number of other plans for dial-up and dedicated accounts.

  2. What web browser(s) can I use?

You can use any browser you like. We recommend Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

  3. Can I register my own domain name (mycompany.com)?

We provide a service to register your domain name on our server if you want. The charge for this service is a $50 setup fee and $10.00 per month (in addition to the $35.00 per year charge from InterNIC). There are additional costs if you wish to host a website on that domain. Call us for details if you wish to have a permanent domain name registered.

  4. Can I host my own pages without a domain name?

Yes - a personal Internet account with us allows you access to a personal directory that is accessible from the World Wide Web. This will be accessible as http://www.egl.net/users/<your name>. You should be aware that only personal web pages are included in our standard residential dial-up plans. All business web pages will be charged a web hosting fee.

  5. I don't see the "Dial-Up Networking" in "My Computer".

In Window's ME and Windows 2000, Dial-Up Networking is located in the Control Panel. If you don't see Dial-Up Networking anywhere, go to Control Panel, and double click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon. Then click on the "Windows Setup" tab. Select the line showing "Communications" and click the "Details" button. Put a check in the box on the line for "Dial-Up Networking". Then click OK until you get back to the Windows desktop.

  6. I can't get connected to the Internet.

Do you hear the phone dialing/answering? If so, skip to this section.

If you do not hear dialing, then check the properties of the connection double click the My Computer icon, double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon, Right mouse click on the connection icon used to connect to Eagle Net - the name of it is whatever you named it when you created it, click on Properties from the drop-down menu). Check the modem settings to be sure they are the same as the actual modem in your computer. If you don't know the modem type, select "(Standard Modem Types)" as the Manufacturer, and select Standard 14400 bps Modem or Standard 28800 bps Modem from the Modems list (if you don't have at least a 14400 bps modem, you'll be very disappointed with your Internet surfing speed). Click the Next/OK/Close buttons until you're out of the properties settings (Yes to save if prompted). Reboot your machine and try connecting again.

If it still doesn't work (you don't hear it dial), you may need more technical assistance. Give us our 24 hour support desk a call at 1-877-724-6389.

I hear the phone dial and answer, but I can't get connected to the Internet.

Double check your login name and password (be sure you're NOT putting the @egl.net as part of your login name). Upper/Lower case of the password SHOULD NOT matter here, but check that too, just to be safe. If you're sure that's correct but you still can't get in, try using a regular dialing program (like Terminal in the Accessories group on Windows 3.1, or Dialer or HyperTerminal on Windows95). Using one of these programs to dial into our system, you will be presented with a login prompt. Enter your login name and password as prompted. If, after entering the password, you get another login prompt, the login name or password you entered is different that what we have in our system. Call us to straighten it out. If, after entering your password, you start getting a stream of garbage on the screen, you successfully logged in. At this point, you'll need to hang up and try dialing in with the Internet dialer (Terminal, HyperTerminal or Dialer programs will NOT work as your Internet connection, we just used them to verify your login name and password.)

  7. I can't get to my E-mail account.

First of all a simple test. Are you able to surf around on the Internet (with Internet Explorer or Netscape)? If so, try this: Go to location http://webmail.egl.net/ this screen will present you with a login to your E-mail configuration. Enter your username (without the @egl.net part) and your password. If you do not get logged in OK, then your login name or password you typed is different than what is in our system. Double check for proper capitalization in the password! It IS case sensitive. If you still can't get in on this screen, call us to double check your E-mail account.

  8. Why does it take so long to validate my user name and password?

Go into Dialup Networking, EagleNet icon, properties. Turn off "Logon to network", IPX/SPX, and NetBEUI.

  9. Why don't I connect at 56k?

This question deserves a page all to itself. 56k technology takes advantage of the "mostly" upgraded digital phone network. 56k is very sensitive, and in general, you need an excellent quality phone line to get speeds above 40k. In addition, your modem may have updated "firmware" or a driver that improves your connection speed. Check with your computer or modem manufacturer for details.

We have an entire section of the site devoted to modem problems. Click here to go there.
