Iserv Protects Customers from MyDoom Virus
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - February 5, 2004 - The Iserv Co., one of the largest independent ISPs (Internet Service Providers) in Michigan, today reported that it was able to stop nearly all incoming emails carrying the MyDoom virus from reaching customers' email "in" boxes.
The MyDoom virus, a fast-spreading computer worm that triggered an attack on the Web sites of two prominent business software makers February 1, was detected by Iserv technicians on January 26, the same day the virus was detected globally. Iserv's filtering software immediately began blocking the infected emails. Soon after, Iserv technicians actively launched several other filters to block variations of the MyDoom virus.
"This was by far one of the worst attacks we have seen," said Kevin Mitchell, senior systems administrator for Iserv. "At its height, the worm was creating 15% of all email traffic. We were able to respond immediately to contain the worm and prevent most of the infected emails from reaching our customers."
The MyDoom virus has caused more than $38.5 billion in economic damage so far, making it one of the worst in history, according to the latest report from mi2g Intelligence Unit (mi2g.net), a British digital risk firm.
"We are pleased with the speed and responsiveness of our engineers in containing this destructive worm and in our ability to shield our customers from infection," said Victor Shepherd, chief executive officer of Iserv. "Our customers, both business and residential, rely on safe, secure Internet service. As a company, we are committed to protecting our customers' Internet experience from the dangers of worms, viruses and other threats."
Iserv shielded most of its customers from the worm, including those of Iserv's affiliate companies, Parrett in Benton Harbor, DataWise in Allegan and EagleNet and IntraWorld in Holland.
Mitchell noted that traffic from the virus has substantially deceased, though Iserv remains vigilant for variations of the virus.
