Setup Information for Windows 98

Before you begin please contact Customer Support at 1-877-531-7498 to set up your new account. Note: While you're setting up your new account please keep in mind usernames can be numbers and/or letters only, no spaces, start with a letter and be 12 characters maximum in length. Passwords can be numbers and/or letters only, no spaces, can start with either a number or letter, be 12 characters maximum in length and are case sensitive.

Windows 98 PPP Configuration
1) Verify that Dial-Up Networking, TCP/IP and Client for Microsoft Networks are installed from your Windows 98 CD-ROM

  1. click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel, and double click the Network icon
  2. if you don’t see Dial-UP Adapter listed as an installed network component:
    1. click Add, then double click on Adapter
    2. from the list of Manufacturers in the left column, click on Microsoft
    3. from the list of Network Adapters in the right column, click on Dial-Up Adapter
    4. click OK
  1. if you don’t see TCP/IP listed as an installed network component:
    1. click Add, then double click on Protocol
    2. from the list of Manufacturers in the left column, click on Microsoft
    3. from the list of Protocols right column, click on TCP/IP
  1. if you don’t see Client for Microsoft Networks listed as an installed network component:
    1. click Add, then double click on Client
    2. from the list of Manufacturers in the left column, click on Microsoft
    3. from the list of Network Clients in the right column, click on Client for Microsoft Networks
    4. click OK
  1. if you added items in steps b), c), or d), follow the prompts from Windows 98
  2. If you added "Dial-Up Adapter" in step b), go to the Control Panel. Double click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon. Now click on the "Windows Setup" tab. Select the line "Communications" and click "Details". Make sure there is a checkmark in front of "Dial-Up Networking" and add it if necessary. Now click OK until you return to the Windows desktop.
  1. Now that the drivers are installed, you need to configure them to work with Windows 98. Go to the Control Panel and double click the Network icon. You should get a dialog box like this:

  2. Double click on the TCP/IP protocol. If dialog box appears, click OK.
  3. Double click on the TCP/IP protocol. If dialog box appears, click OK.
  4. There are six sections to this dialog box. You will need to click on the tabs at the top of the screen to access each section. "Select" for these six tabs means make sure the black bubble is next to that option.

IP Address

  • Select Obtain An IP Address Automatically

WINS Configuration

  • Select Disable WINS Resolution

Gateway

  • Do not enter any gateway numbers
  • If there are any numbers listed as Installed Gateways, remove them now.


Bindings

  • By default, the Select Client for Microsoft Networks is checked. No other options, if present, should be checked.

Advanced
No changes from the Default values are necessary

DNS Configuration

  • This is probably where the problem lies if you are having trouble
  • Select Disable DNS. DNS stands for Domain Name Service

When you’re done with these options, click OK to return to the Network Control Panel. Click ok again to exit the Network Control Panel. Windows 98 will ask you to reboot. Click Yes and run the kitchen for a quick snack. Once you’re computer has rebooted, it’s time to set it up to dial Eagle Net!

Set Up the Connection Icon

  1. Open the My Computer icon by double clicking on it. Now open the Dial Up Networking icon by double clicking on it. Double click on the Make New Connection icon. This will walk you through the Make New Connection Wizard.
  2. Name the connection "Eagle" or "Eagle Net", or whatever you wish to call it. What you name it will not effect the type of connection. Your modem (which should have been configured when you installed Windows 98) should be shown in the Select a Modem area. Click on Configure.
  3. In the General section, set your modem speed. (A general rule is to set it to the first speed above but not equal to your modem’s maximum speed.) DO NOT place a checkmark before Only Connect at this Speed. If you have a 56k modem, you may need to come back to this section to adjust your max speed lower for a more reliable connection.
  4. No changes will be needed on the Connection or Options tabs.
  5. Click on Next> in the Make New Connection Wizard. Enter the phone number you need to use from the table below:
  6. Local Internet Access Numbers for All Accounts up to v.90 56k modems ISDN
    Holland/Zeeland areas: 395-5292 395-5292
    Grand Rapids, Rockford areas: 451-2261 451-2261
    Grand Haven, Ferrysburg, Spring Lake areas: 850-8522 850-8511
    Cedar Springs and Sand Lake areas: 696-0840 N/A
  7. Click on Next> and then Finish

 

Setting up the Dial-Up Properties

  1. Click with the right mouse button on the newly created connection. Then choose properties from the pop up menu that appears. You will get a dialog box named whatever you called the connection (e.g. "Eagle" or "Eagle Net")
  2. Press the Server Type… button. You’ll get the Server Types dialog box. In the Type of Dial-Up Server section, make sure that PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98 is selected.
  3. In the Advanced Options:
    1. make sure that Log on to network, Enable software compression, and Require encrypted password are NOT checked.
    2. make sure that TCP/IP in the Allowed network protocols section IS checked, NetBeui and IPX/SPX should NOT be checked.
  4. Press the TCP/IP Settings... button.
    • Check Server assigned IP address.
    • Check Specify name server adresses.
    • In the Primary DNS box enter: 208.159.114.2
    • In the Secondary DNS box enter: 208.159.114.6
    • Leave the Primary and Secondary WINS as all zeros.
    • Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network should both be checked.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click OK again. You’re almost ready to dial
  7. !

 

Dialing In and Getting Connected

  1. Double-click your session icon that you made. You will get a Connect To dialog, which is shown below. Enter a temporary username of visitor and a temporary password of eagle in the appropriate areas. Do not click on Save Password. If you want to save your password, wait until you receive your account confirmation from us.

  2. Click on Connect and your modem should start dialing. After a few rings, Eagle Net’s modem should answer.
  3. You’ll see a screen like this:

  4. You are now ready to sign-up. If you have not already contacted EagleNet Customer Support you may do so by calling 1.877.531.7498 to register for your new account.
  5. Once you have your new username and password, you can begin logging on with it. You will also need to setup whatever email software that you’ll be using. Your account confirmation will have all of the information your email program will ask for.

  7. If you would like to set up news groups, our NNTP News server is: news.egl.net. You will find instructions on our site (click here) for setting this up in Internet Explorer.
  8. To start surfing the web, dial EagleNet and open up your browser software (Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator).
